Heather Munden meant to make a career as a chef, but a college lecture about winemaking changed her course. Today, she serves as Artisan Winemaker for St. Francis Winery & Vineyards, working under Wine Master Thomas Mackey, a man who’s been in charge of winemaking at St. Francis since 1983. Munden’s job involves taking the best of the best grapes to make select wines. To say her grapes are handpicked is not an exaggeration. Workers weed out any small grapes and stems to make the most flavorful wine possible. In herspare time, Munden helps raise vegetables, animals, and bees at home, a practice she says makes her a “better winemaker.”
